Cobia

Just a quick report had a trip yesterday with Paul and Nancy Gregory. Lots of medium sized Jacks on the beach but we also got to date my biggest Cobia ever it was 61 pounds on a certified digital scale. Here are a couple pics, hard to get a good picture of an unruley big Cobia.

Winter is gone!!

Fishing has been great!! The beach conditions have been good for the most part and it has been a banner spring for Cobia. The Jacks have been around and Permit are starting to show, hope everyone is getting out and having some fun.

Pompano

A few species took a pretty good beating during the cold weather we had this past month. But one species that really pushed into the river was the Pompano. The bite has been as good as it can be, at one point during my charter this past Saturday I counted almost 100 boats fishing for the tasty little guys. Trout fishing seems to be good as well, we caught seven or eight above average keeper size fish that Saturday.

My trip that Saturday was a group trip set up by Mike Holliday, it included six guides and a dozen anglers. We picked them up at River Palms fish camp and set out for a full day, all the boats did well on Pompano, Ladyfish, and Trout. Each boat kept a handfull of fish for the guys to have a fish fry later that night at River Palms.
The big Jacks should be showing soon.

Busy week

For those of you that don't know I have taken on a new part time job as a Quail hunting guide at a Plantation in Okeechobee FL. I enjoy it, and it gives me the oportunity to earn some extra money as well as using my Labs to flush the Quail after the Pointers go on point. Dog's and wingshooting have become just as much a passion as fishing has been all my life, so to be able to do both is great, but lots of work when you combine a couple hunts plus a few fishing trips together in one week and being at the Southern Angler the rest of the time. On to the fishing report for the week. The Pompano bite this week has been as good as I have ever seen it. My charter yesterday with Nick Mcdonald and his two friends proved to be a good Pomp day with 15 or 16 to the boat and many more lost, with a mix of Ladyfish to keep the rods bent.

The day before that I was on the water with John Crockett who was an excellent fly caster. John wanted to give the big Jacks on the beach a try but it was to early in the season and we never saw the first one. We did find a nice big school of Cobia to get us excited, along with plenty of Spanish mackeral to keep the action moving.

I will be on the water again tomorrow fishing a group charter with Mike Holliday. Hoping for good weather and lots of action.
